A website which tells the story of the Battle of Bannockburn was launched yesterday as the countdown to the 700th anniversary of the historic event got under way.

The site has been set up as organisers continue to work on a £9 million state-of-the-art visitor centre which will open to the public in 2014.

Work on the Bannockburn centre is being run by the National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland and is funded by the Scottish Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A Hollywood-style sign has also been placed at the Robert the Bruce statue at the battlefield site.

David McAllister, project director of the National Trust for Scotland, said: "The Bannockburn brand represents what the project is trying to achieve, to educate audiences on the facts behind the Bannockburn story as accurately and compellingly as possible. The trust takes pride in ensuring the story is told in a way which gives every visitor the chance to enjoy the experience." Picture: Donald MacLeod
