Sports label Nike is to pay homage to traditional Scottish dress with a special range of tartan created for the golf course.

Nike Golf Dark plaid and Nike Golf Light plaid were both logged with the Scottish Register of Tartans on February 24.

The plaids, which both feature the colours grey, white and red, are a distinctive modern check. Dark includes a wide dark grey and red check, while Light has the same pattern in more muted colours. It is thought garments made from these tartans could be worn by sporting stars such as Tiger Woods, who has a contract with Nike.

The registration note adds: "The Nike Golf Tartan was produced to respect, reflect, and connect Nike products to the heritage and culture of the game."

According to the register, they were designed by Borders-based company Lochcarron of Scotland. The registration notes add only "customers of Nike Golf, Nike Inc" have the right to wear the tartans.

It is thought they have been created ahead of the 2014 Ryder Cup, due to take place at Gleneagles, to allow Nike to produce a new clothing range inspired by golf's Scottish heritage.
