It will be whisky galore for every person on the Isle of Harris later this year as a new distillery recognises the island's population in its first single malt.

The Isle of Harris Distillery is limiting its first run of bottles to 1916 - the number of people living on the Hebridean island.

It is hoped that the distillery in Tarbert will start producing single malt whisky this year, with a bottle of 'The Hearach' whisky - named after the Gaelic word for an inhabitant of Harris - costing whisky lovers £400.

As well as the bottle of malt, buyers will also have their name engraved on an oak cask stave to be permanently displayed in the distillery, as well as a commemorative book and a lifetime of free tours at the site.

Launching the 1916 venture, the distillery said: "There are 1,916 men, women and children living in the Isle of Harris. Each one is unique, from the big personalities to characters of quiet countenance.

"Before we send our special island dram out into the world, we're giving you the opportunity to buy something very special."
