FIREFIGHTERS were called to two different wildfires on the Hebridean island of Lewis.

Miles of flames burned through heather on high ground at An Ard, Ranish, North Lochs, a few miles outside Stornoway.

Following dry, sunny weather, a blustery south westerly wind fanned the flames over a ridge at the back of the village of Ranish threatening grazing land.

In a second incident, three fire crews from Stornoway and Tarbert stations extinguished a wildfire at Keose, South Lochs.

A stand-by crew was tasked to cover for any emergencies at Stornoway.

The incidents came as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Wildfire Forum renewed warnings about the increased risk of wildfires, particularly in the east of Scotland.

The organisations are reminding the public to be extra careful during this period of heightened risk and not to carelessly dispose of smoking materials, ensure BBQs are properly extinguished and try to avoid setting campfires.

The public are urged to call 999 if they see what they believe to be a wildfire with no obvious signs of people managing it.
