THOUSANDS of wildlife lovers are expected to attend Scotland's first ever Birdfair later this month.

The event, at Hopetoun House in South Queensferry, will feature 80 stalls selling products for bird-lovers, talks and walks.

Birds and green tourism are big business in Scotland, with bird food sales rising in the past two years – particularly last winter when they rose by 140%.

The RSPB, which is organising the Birdfair, is hoping it can tap into this market with its event on May 19 and 20.

The products on sale will include wildlife technology, books and artwork. Conservation experts will also be attending the event to offer workshops, walks and cookery demonstrations.

Stuart Housden, director of RSPB Scotland, said: "The Scottish Birdfair is not just a celebration of Scotland's amazing wildlife, it provides an opportunity for people to learn more about nature and enjoy a family day away from city life.

"As well as fascinating talks, there will be tips to try out in the garden, guided walks exploring the grounds of Hopetoun House and interactive workshops for all ages. There will be something for everybody."
