Witness texts rolled out

WITNESSES across Scotland will receive text messages to remind them to attend court after a successful test project at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The pilot was introduced to avoid costly adjournments, and 7% of witnesses who received a text said they would not have otherwise remembered to be at court.

Those giving evidence in summary cases will now benefit from the service, with a text sent three days before the hearing.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "The witness texting initiative has already worked well since it was trialled in Edinburgh Sheriff Court by the Crown Office, and I am delighted to see that witnesses across Scotland will now benefit."
