A 90-year-old woman has died in hospital five days after being attacked in her own home.

A man who originally appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of Georgina Barnett will now appear in court later this week to face a murder charge.

The family of Ms Barnett, who had lived in Ramsay Road, Kirkcaldy, for 35 years, fondly recalled the pensioner, who was known as Doddy to friends and relatives.

Ms Barnett's family released a statement through police. Her niece, Angela Copeland, said: "Doddy was a very special person to everyone who knew her, particularly her family, friends and neighbours.

"She had lived in Ramsay Road for 35 years and in that time had many friends and was a well-known member of the community.

"We loved her dearly – she always had time for her family and friends, and her loss is very hard for us all to take.

"Many people have told us how special a person she was to them, and have paid their respects, but we would now ask to be left to grieve in peace."

Ms Barnett was originally attacked in her home on Tuesday and had remained in Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy since.

She died on Sunday night, a spokesman for Police Scotland said.

Thomas Brogan, 46, was arrested and appeared in Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court last week charged with attempted murder. He remains in custody and is due to appear again in court later this week.

Chief inspector Gordon Mitchell said: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this alleged attack but if anyone has information in connection with this they should call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
