A 22-year-old woman has been sexually assaulted in a city underpass.
The alleged victim was approached by a man at 9pm last night in the underpass beneath Wester Hailes Road in the west of Edinburgh.
He spoke to her then sexually assaulted her before she ran off towards Murrayburn, police have said.
The suspect is white, aged in his mid-20s to early-30s, has dark hair, is 5ft 8in, has an athletic build and his nose seemed to have been broken. He was wearing a white hooded top with an emblem on the left chest.
Detective Sergeant Keith Fairbairn said: "While the victim was not injured, she was left understandably distressed as a result of her ordeal, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.
"Anyone who was in the area of the underpass that runs beneath Wester Hailes Road towards Murrayburn around 9pm last night, who either witnessed the incident or who noticed the suspect there, should contact police.
"Likewise, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch."
Police have asked that anyone with information about this incident contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
