A young footballer from Ayr has died in his sleep hours after scoring for his club.

Stuart McGrady, 29, played in Maybole Juniors' 3-0 win over Ardeer Thistle on Saturday.

The former Ayr United, Queen's Park and Cumnock player passed away that night.

A spokesman for Ayr United said: "We are saddened by the news of the untimely death of former Ayr player Stuart McGrady.

"Stuart was only 29 and had been playing recently for Maybole."

Maybole Juniors FC's website features an image of Stuart celebrating in the team colours.

Former teammates posted tributes on social media.

Former Queen's Park and Kilmarnock midfielder Paul Cairney tweeted: "Absolutely gutted hearing Stuart McGrady passed away this morning."

John McKeown said: "Absolutely devastated to hear the tragic news about Stuart McGrady. Played beside him at Ayr Utd and Cumnock. Great lad. RIP Stuart."

Barry Douglas, another former teammate who now plays for Lech Poznan in Poland, tweeted: "One of the nicest guys I know passed away in his sleep. See u soon bro."

Stuart played part-time for Maybole and also worked as a shoe sales rep. The former Kyle Academy pupil lived in Ayr.
