A blushing bride spent her special day in the back of a police car after her bridal vehicle broke down and an officer rushed her to the wedding reception.

Stephanie Ritchie has praised the police officer who went beyond the call of duty after passing the scene of the breakdown.

Stephanie and her new husband David Ritchie had tied the knot at Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church in Paisley before they headed for a reception with friends and family.

But the newlyweds were left standing at the side of the road when their car broke down.

Luckily, they were helped by PC Lynsey Arthur, who is based in Cumnock, East Ayrshire.

Wedding guests were surprised to see the couple arrive in a police car at Lochside House Hotel in New Cumnock on Saturday.

Following the drama, the newlywed Stephanie posted a message of thanks on the Ayrshire Police Division Facebook page.

She said: "I'd just like to thank Lynsey from the bottom of our hearts.

"She totally saved the day for us.

"She is an absolute credit to Ayrshire police division and they should be proud."
