Five Second World War veterans have received France’s highest honour for bravery in a special ceremony in Edinburgh.

The Scottish veterans were presented with the Legion d’Honneur, in a reception held by the Lord Provost Donald Wilson in the City of Edinburgh Council City Chambers yesterday.

They were commended for their role in liberating France, as four of the veterans took part in the D-Day landings in June 1944.

The Herald:

The medals were presented by Emmanuel Cocher, the French Consul General in Scotland to Alexander Addison, 93, Thomas Gilzean, 95, Alexander Mees, 89, Jim Alexander Stirling, 90, and David Watt, 90.

The men are from Edinburgh and Hawick, in the Borders. Mr Gilzean has previously won the Edinburgh Award.
