Pioneering Scottish scientist Mary Somerville is poised to make banknote history by being the first woman, other than the Queen, to adorn an RBS banknote.
The 19th-century astronomer and mathematician is expected to today be confirmed as the winner of a Facebook poll set up by the Royal Bank of Scotland to commemorate a true giant of Scottish science.
Mary Somerville was shortlisted alongside theoretical physicist James Clerk Maxwell and engineer Thomas Telford.
Despite having to study in secret, her work would eventual lead to the discovery of the planet Neptune.
If, as expected, she is crowned the winner, her face will feature on the new RBS polymer £10 note.
