A man who walked into a Scots town’s bookmakers and placed a trio of £1,000 bets on the identity of the next president of the United States could have the last laugh come November.

The mystery punter stands to make £21,000 if Marco Rubio, a Florida senator, becomes the next US president.

The man who was in his 30s surprised staff at William Hill’s in Oban when he placed three £1,000 wagers in succession on Mr Rubio at 8/1 Mr Rubio is regarded as having an outside chance of winning the Republican nomination as he trails both Donald Trump and previous frontrunner Ted Cruz in the polls, and even if he is named the candidate, he has still got to beat Democratic Party’s nominee, either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders.

The man, who said he was visiting the shop for the first time, according to a spokesman. However, he will have to wait until the early hours of November 9 to find out if he has won.

William Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe said: “He actually placed a £1,000 bet on Rubio, then asked for the same bet again, and then decided to have a third.”
