An Anniesland supermarket is bracing itself for a busy Valentine’s Day weekend with a special offer on fresh oysters for just 25p each.

Morrison’s supermarket is running the promotion in the store which will see British Pacific Oysters, which are cultivated on the West Coast of Scotland and Ireland, sold cheaper than ever before in the UK.

Adam Cotton, Morrison’s seafood buyer, said: “'We want to make oysters affordable enough for anyone to try them, and they now cost little more than a fish finger.”

Research by the supermarket chain revealed almost two-thirds of Britons have never eaten an oyster, with a quarter saying their reason was perceived price.

Oysters from Harrods or Selfridges have been known to sell for as much as £5 each – 20 times higher than Morrison’s asking price.

It has long been claimed the shellfish has aphrodisiac qualities, while in the 1800s it was known as a peasant dish.

Henry IV reportedly enjoyed devouring 300 oysters – as an appetizer – while 18th century Italian adventurer Casanova is said to have consumed up to 60 oysters every day, washed down with his evening punch.

Oysters are low in cholesterol and rich in polyunsaturated fats and zinc. The UK harvested 2,300 tonnes of the shellfish last year, with half of this exported to Europe

Morrison’s fishmongers will be on hand for anyone unsure of how to serve and eat the delicacy.
