AN illuminated quote created by the film director Terry Gilliam has gone on show after a Pythonesque mix-up postponed its unveiling by a day.

The artwork was presented to the public a day late after Edinburgh City Council raised fears the ten-foot sign might “blow away in the wind”.

The Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust, who commissioned the sign, came up against the city's licensing authority over the projection of words from Don Quixote, a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.

But the council admitted the embarrassing hold-up was not needed in the end, and the unveiling went ahead on Friday.

The quote reads: 'I shall tear up trees with my bare teeth! I shall crush mountains with my fists! I shall go crazy – for love!

Gilliam said: "I just realised, that's my Valentine's card to Edinburgh. It's about passion. It's about believing in something, and being mad.

"Being crazy enough because something is so important to you. Most people are so calm and careful and studied, and go through life playing it safe and I don't want to encourage people to do that. I want them to be dangerous, take chances."
