A PRISONER of war camp set up in the Highlands during the First World War has been awarded £10,000 to mark its centenary.

The Kinlochleven Prisoner of War Camp, near Lochaber, will receive the cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project to commemorate its opening and to celebrate the civilised nature of the camp.

Mike Fairman, chairman of the camp's Centenary Commemoration Group, said: "We were thrilled to receive this grant award which will allow us to pull together so much local history and celebrate this significant chapter in Lochaber's history as well as helping to promote the local economy through increased tourism."

The Kinlochleven POW camp was the largest in the Highlands.

Anyone who has material to contribute to the project is urged to share it with the group at Leven Centre and the library at Kinlochleven, where an exhibition will be launched on August 13 paying tribute to its effect on the local community and the experiences of the prisoners.
