An 11-year-old boy has been charged after 28 gravestones were pushed over at a cemetery.

Police fear the incident, which caused £80,000 of damage, was caused after youths were lured to the area playing app Pokemon Go.

The youth will now be reported to the Children's Reporter.

Police confirmed on Friday that an 11-year-old boy had been traced in connection with vandalism at the West Lothian graveyard.

Chief Inspector Stevie Dolan, Local Area Commander for West Lothian said: "We recognise the impact this incident had on the community and to those with loved ones at rest within the cemetery and worked closely with our colleagues at West Lothian Council during our investigation.

"Offences of this nature will not be tolerated and whenever they occur we will work with all of our relevant partners to bring those responsible to account for their actions."

Executive councillor for services to the community, George Paul, added: “This is a sad incident and one that has caused a lot of distress to many people.

“Graveyards should be respected and cherished at all times and I hope this incident acts as a reminder that this type of unacceptable behaviour has consequences and it will not go unnoticed.”
