DOZENS of people touched by the plight of vandal-hit Gowanbank Primary have pledged to help - including city businesses.

Generous bosses at Hamley's, the St Enoch Centre and Silverburn have all come forward to offer financial support.

And two crowdfunding pages, one set up by the Nitshill primary's parent council and the other by local residents, have raised more than £600.

Head teacher John Daly said: "It has been fantastic.

"I have had people who are former colleagues and colleagues from Education Scotland get in touch to offer to pull on their Marigolds and help out.

"People rally around and make you think how the world is full of nice people.

"I'm genuinely touched but I should add that this is all about our children at Gowanbank.

"For people who will never know our children or ever meet our children to donate to help them, this kind of generosity restores your faith in the human spirit.

"People who have never met us or seen us have come forward to help us - that is wonderful."

The clean-up operation at the school has begun but it will take days to repair the £10,000 damage caused by thugs.

As we told on Tuesday, mindless youths rampaged through every room in the building, stealing nothing but trashing everything they could.

They even made popcorn and paused for jelly and ice cream as they took their time smashing school property.

Now famous toy store Hamley's has stepped in to offer £250 worth of colouring materials.

And St Enoch's Centre chiefs are giving £250 to be spent in the shopping mall.

Samantha Connolly, Hamleys Glasgow Store Manager, said: ‘We were very disappointed to hear what happened at Gowanbank school.

"We understand that the schools’ arts and crafts supplies were badly affected and that they are so important to the school and their pupils.

"As soon as we heard we wanted to reach out and help a local school in need. Hamleys values the importance of both the education and happiness of children so were delighted to be able to help to rebuild the school’s lost supplies."

Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of the St Enoch Centre, added: “We were appalled when we saw the damage at Gowanbank Primary School and immediately felt compelled to offer our support.

"Our donation won’t replace everything that the school has lost, but it will help them to obtain essential supplies before pupils return for the new term.

"We work closely with a number of local schools and strongly believe that every pupil should have the chance to flourish and enjoy their education.”

Liz Cameron, executive member for children, young people and lifelong learning, was close to tears of frustration as she spoke about the damage done.

They tore smart boards from the walls and drew obscenities on white boards, smashed crockery, let off fire extinguishers ransacked the staff room.

They made popcorn in two microwaves before smashing them to pieces and raided Gowanbank's kitchen.

In the infants rooms, wash hand basins were smashed and resources such as crayons and paper were strewn across the floor.
