The leading Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev will now not be performing two concerts at the Edinburgh International Festival after injuring his shoulder.

Pletnev was due to perform with the Russian National Orchestra this coming weekend at the Usher Hall.

He will now be replaced by Paul Lewis and Denus Matsuev for the concerts.

Pletnev has injured his clavicle, meaning he cannot play the piano, a source said.

A spokeswoman said: "Paul Lewis and Denis Matsuev replace Mikhail Pletnev as soloist.

"Mikhail Pletnev will not now perform with the Russian National Orchestra due to an injury to his shoulder.

"The International Festival is extremely grateful to Paul Lewis and Denis Matsuev for stepping in."

Lewis will be soloist for the first EIF concert by the Russian National Orchestra, conducted by Kirill Karabits.

In a change of programme he will perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 25 in C major KV503.

The concert also sees the Orchestra perform a work by Musorgsky and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 2 ‘Little Russian’ and takes place on Saturday 20 August in the Usher Hall.

For the second concert, on Sunday evening, the soloist will be Matsuev performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1, instead of the previously advertised Rachmaninov Concerto, alongside the orchestra’s performance of a work by Valentin Silvestrov and Scriabin’s Symphony No 2.
