THE frantic search for a missing two-year-old child ended in tragedy yesterday with the discovery of the youngster’s body in a river.

He was reported missing from a house in remote Milton of Drimmie, near Bridge of Cally, Perthshire at about 11.15am.

A major search and rescue operation was mounted, but police confirmed the toddler’s body has been found in the River Ericht.

Paramedics made desperate attempts to revive the child, however it was later confirmed he had died at the scene.

A statement from Police Scotland, Tayside Division said: “Around 12:35pm, the child was located in the River Ericht, close to the property.

“He was removed from the water by fire personnel and treated by paramedics, who had attended the scene with the air ambulance.

“Tragically, the boy did not survive. His family are being supported by officers at this time.”

Witnesses described seeing a large number of emergency service vehicles passing through Bridge of Cally, with motorists being directed away from the area. Floral tributes were later left at the scene.

John Swinney, MSP for Perthshire North, said: “My deepest sympathies to everyone involved.”

Local councillor Liz Grant, Provost of Perth and Kinross, said: “It will be absolutely devastating for the family and the community. It is a very small community. Bridge of Cally is a small village. The River Ericht is fast coming down through that area, particularly at this time of year.”
