David Davis toasted the start of the Brexit process with a glass of red wine from France.

The Brexit Secretary stressed he did not order the wine, but indicated his choice of tipple was in accordance with Theresa May's stance that despite leaving the EU "we are not leaving Europe".

Brexit campaigners have argued the UK will secure a good trade deal with the European Union because French winemakers and German car manufacturers will pressure their governments to protect their major export markets.

On LBC Radio, Mr Davis was asked by presenter Nick Ferrari whether the "cheeky glass of red" he allowed himself at the end of the day was French or from the New World.

"I didn't order it, but it was French," he said.

"When the Prime Minister says we are leaving the European Union, we are not leaving Europe, that's certainly true about the wine."
