A SCOTTISH IT consultant who secretly married another woman behind his wife’s back was caught out after she spotted a picture of the couple together on Facebook, a court has heard.

Iain Theyers, 45, tied the knot with Louise Martin while still allegedly hitched to wife of five years Marian Belahonia.

Spanish teacher Marian Belahonia, a mother of one, became suspicious after they split up and he suddenly no longer kept in contact with their son and vanished.

She employed a private investigator to track him down, without success, in an effort to file for divorce.

Instead she did her own Facebook detection, finding his profile only to be shocked to find a new woman she suspected he had married.

She was later to learn he had got married again in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, and she went to the police.

Self employed Mr Theyers, 45, of Balloch, near Inverness, has gone on trial at Hull Crown Court denying a charge of bigamy.

Gordon Stables, prosecuting, told the jury he would seek to prove Mr Theyers married Mrs Martin when “he was and still is married and his wife was, and still is alive – she being Marian Belahonia.”

“Ms Marian Belahonia was a citizen of Peru. She applied for a travel visa to the UK -and came to UK in 2004. She moved to Nottingham, where she carried out voluntary work. It was while there, she met Iain Theyers. In due course they began a relationship.”

He said both parties had previous marriage,s but they were not relevant as before their marriage they were both divorced.

He said the relationship blossomed, with Ms Belahonia moving in with Mr Theyers in Nottingham in December 2005.

“They lived together for about a year before the defendant asked Marian Belahonia to marry him,” said Mr Stables. “ By this time, Marian Belahonia’s visa had expired. She returned to Peru. The couple made plans to marry in Peru. He travelled to Peru in December 2006.”

Mr Stables said he lied to the registrar at Bridlington Town Hall before his marriage to Ms Martin when asked if he had ever been married after his first marriage with Kelly Jones ended on June 6 2006.

The trial, which is expected to last a week, continues.
