Scottish nationalist activists descended on the Tunnock’s factory in Uddingston yesterday to demonstrate against changes to the biscuit-maker’s packaging.

Well-known activist Sean Clerkin, along with the Scottish Resistance, demonstrated against the the Scottish Saltire being removed and replaced with the Union Jack.

Counter pro-union supporters also attended to show support for the changes as they waved Union Jacks flags.

The protest came just days after the Teacake-maker revealed plans to break into the Japanese market in an attempt to take the brand global by filling a giant 40ft shipping container with the firm’s wafer cream which was sent off to Okinawa.

Alan Burnett, the company’s export manager, said at the time: “We have been working with this firm for the last 40 years or so. But last year, we took advantage of a couple of Scottish Government grants to enable them to take part in an exhibition in Tokyo. Now we want to go more mainstream and get into the big city markets.”

At the beginning of last year, The Herald reported on how Tunnock’s stirred up controversy after removing the lion rampant from its logo in a bid to sell more teacakes to the rest of the UK.

The Scottish resistance campaigners then also called for a boycott of Teacakes outside the Uddingston factory.
