SCOTS superstar DJ Calvin Harris has revealed he sent private messages to singer Dua Lipa on Twitter before persuading her to pair up with him on their UK number one single, One Kiss.
Harris, who appeared on the Graham Norton Show with Lipa on Friday, said the pair connected on the social network after “a very brief thing” at a party two years ago.
Harris, who has 13 million followers on Twitter, later asked London-born Lipa, who is followed by 1.9 million, people, to sing on One Kiss via direct messages, known as DMs.
Norton asked: “In terms of this track One Kiss, how did this happen? Who spoke to who?”
Harris pointed at Lipa and said: “I chased you…I DMd her on Twitter.”
Lipa smiled and confirmed: “Yeah, slid into the DMs … it’s a great form of contact, lots of stuff happens on Twitter. People make friends on Twitter.”
When Harris was asked if they’d met previously, he said: “We sort of bumped into each other about two years ago somewhere, but it was a very brief thing.”
Lipa laughed and said: “That sounds really bad. It was at a party and we just sort of said hi to each other.”
Another guest on the show, Claudia Winkleman, teased the pair and said: “You know there’s more to this.”
Norton laughed and replied: “They followed each other on Twitter after this, that’s all I know.”
Harris and Lipa smiled uncomfortably but maintained a dignified silence.
Although the pair were photographed flirting at the Brit Awards after party in February, Lipa has been romantically linked to comedian Jack Whitehall, musicians Paul Klein and celebrity chef Issac Carew. Harris has previously dated Taylor Swift and Rita Ora.
One Kiss is the fastest selling number one single of 2018, amassing a combined total of more than 70,000 units – 7.1 million streams and 22,000 downloads.
After the announcement, Lipa tweeted a picture Harris with his arm around her shoulders.
She said: “ONE KISS IS NUMBER 1!!! WE ARE SO HAPPY!! Love to all our fans for their support and thank you for listening, sharing and streaming our song it’s officially the fastest selling single of 2018!”
An earlier Tweet said: “Wooohoooohoooooo!!!! THANK YOUUUU @CalvinHarris”.
Harris has had a string of hits and Lipa’s debut album released last year included the number one single New Rules.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
