2000 staff facing axe in latest council cuts

Another stark picture of the bleak future facing council workers across Scotland was painted yesterday, as one of the country’s largest authorities announced plans to axe 2000 jobs, shut primary schools and cut core services.

North Lanarkshire, the fourth-largest council in Scotland but home to many of the country’s most deprived areas, will attempt to save £70 million in the next two years, 12 months quicker than originally anticipated.
