Cafe culture

John Swinney proved himself a dab hand at cooking up chapatis when he visited a new Punjabi cafe run by Sikh women in Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

Punjab’n de Rasoi Cafe, which translates as the Punjabi Women’s Kitchen, was described by the Finance Secretary as a perfect example of the success of the £10.3 million Third Sector Enterprise Fund, which is expected to back more than 180 social ventures over two years.

Mr Swinney got hands-on in the kitchen and won applause from staff for his efforts.

Trishna Singh, business manager of the project, said: “Just to see the sign saying this is the creation of Sikh women is fantastic, the best day of my life that I have been working towards for 25 years, something for the next generation of young Sikh women.”
