Clegg jettisons key pledges from LibDem manifesto

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, has been forced to jettison key pledges to provide free personal care for the elderly and the long-standing commitment to abolishing university tuition fees.

The policies, which have been successfully delivered by the LibDems in Scotland, have been dropped from the party’s manifesto in a belt-tightening exercise by Mr Clegg to prove his honesty with voters.
