Gritting effort by councils comes under fire

Motorists and pedestrians who believe gritting during the recent cold snap left out well-used roads and pavements have given council efforts to keep routes ice-free a frosty response.

In a poll of more than 20,000 of its members, the Automobile Association found three-quarters thought local authorities had dealt with the cold weather not very well or not at all well, while only a quarter rated efforts to clear minor roads of ice as acceptable or better.
