US public demonised me over oil spill, says axed BP chief

Outgoing BP chief Tony Hayward yesterday hit out at Americans he said had demonised and vilified him over his handling of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Speaking after the oil giant confirmed that he would be sacrificed as chief executive to serve the wider interests of the company, Hayward changed his tone from the polished statement he had earlier delivered to accuse the US public of unfairly blaming him for the disaster.
