RUSH hour motorists are facing thick fog on some of Scotland's busiest roads tonight.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Glasgow, Edinburgh, Lothians and Borders regions with drivers warned that visibility will be cut to less than 100 metres (328ft) in places.

Traffic Scotland said motorists should prepare for longer journey times on their way home.

The weather warning affects all routes across the area, including the Forth Road Bridge and the M8 motorway.

In statement on its website, Traffic Scotland said: "The public should be aware that this will lead to difficult driving conditions with minor disruption to travel."

The Herald: Fog caused problems for commuters on the M5 this morning.

There has also been minor disruption to air travel as fog disrupted flights around the UK for a second day.

A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said: "We’ve had 14 departures cancelled.

"A lot of that was the knock on effect from yesterday [Mon] and due to fog elsewhere."

Edinburgh Airport tweeted that fog in London, Amsterdam and Cardiff had "resulted in delays and cancellations" to some flights to and from the capital.

A spokesman said the weather had not impacted on Edinburgh Airport directly, but fog at other airports had impacted on Edinburgh's schedules.

A number of flights were also diverted to the capital, including a 9.50am Dublin-Glasgow flight and a 4.40pm London Heathrow-Aberdeen flight.

The problem looks set to ease tomorrow, with forecasters predicting the fog will be replaced by cloudy skies and outbreaks of rain across the Central Belt.

The fog is also expected to lift around the London area as well, replaced by downpours.
