SCOTRAIL has come in for fresh criticism after a signalling fault stranded thousands of passengers in Glasgow and Ayrshire.

The train operator reported “severe disruption” on morning services yesterday between Glasgow and Stranraer, Ardrossan, Ayr and Largs and between Kilmarnock and Ayr.

Quantity surveyor Colin Hyslop was among those told to evacuate the 8.10am train from Prestwick to Glasgow when it was stopped at Kilwinning Station.

The 53-year-old, from Ayr, said: “I was on my way to an important meeting in Glasgow city centre rather than take my car, I decided the train would be best.

“The train just stopped. There were two barely audible announcements and we just sat there for 10 minutes before being told to get off.

“There was no-one on the platform to tell us what to do. There was talk of replacement buses but, with that amount of people dumped in one place, it was absolute bedlam.

“This kind of thing is happening too often on the railway. It’s just not good enough.”

ScotRail said the problem had been caused by a fault in the signalling system at Lochwinnoch.

ScotRail was asked a number of times yesterday to comment on the disruption but failed to do so.
