A petition has been launched to stop controversial plans to impose drop-charges at Glasgow Airport going ahead.

Plans to introduce a so-called “kiss and fly tax” have been met with anger from the public.

The airport have claimed that the charge will help to reduce congestion around the area.

Under the changes, customers will be charged £2 for a stay of up to 10 minutes.

John Simm, who started the petition, has branded it a “money making scheme”.

Over 400 people have pledged their support for the campaign in less than 24 hours.

One comment posted by Lorraine Garraton, from Motherwell, says: “The airports make enough out of holiday makers, i.e. Ridiculously overpriced food, drinks and goods."

Another from Maxine Williamson, from Glasgow, reads: “ It's a joke, anything for some coin!

"It's not enough that the flight price difference between Edinburgh and Glasgow are a joke and they are only an hour apart, getting nothing else off me even if it is only £2 sheer principle!”

Greig Ker, also from Glasgow, said his reason for signing the petition is that he believes the airport are imposing the charges to “line their pockets” and it has “nothing to do with congestion".

Airport bosses have said that anyone wishing to use the new pick-up and drop-off facility for more than 10 minutes should use the short stay car park.

A free pick-up and drop-off area will be located in the long stay car park where customers can park for nothing for up to 30 minutes and a take the shuttle bus directly to the main terminal building.

Amanda McMillan, managing director at Glasgow Airport, said: “It has been apparent for some time that our current drop-off area, which suffers from severe congestion on a daily basis, is simply no longer fit for purpose.

“It is also the case that people travelling to and from the airport are wholly dependent on road access and the current arrangements are unable to cope with such a large volume of traffic. It is important, therefore, that we have a safe and efficient system in place.

“I appreciate that not everyone will be supportive of the new charging structure, however, we will always continue to provide a free option.

"We have resisted introducing a drop-off charge despite most airports of our size having similar arrangements in place for many years, however, having exhausted all possible alternatives we have now reached a point whereby a chargeable facility is the only way to address congestion, discourage non-airport traffic and encourage best use of our road network.”
