As Network Rail works to deliver more than £5m of enhancements for Scotland’s railway system, passengers are in for travel disruption over the Easter weekend and until the end of the month.

Work is set to begin from the evening of April 14 to 18 to replace and upgrade signalling systems and tracks on the West Coast main line.

At Motherwell, new modern signalling systems will be commissioned in the first phase of a two-year, £100m project to upgrade the signalling infrastructure in the area.

New tracks and points will be installed at Carstairs in South Lanarkshire and at Polmadie, in Glasgow, while engineers will also be working to refurbish and maintain bridges, level crossings, and tracks elsewhere across Scotland.

Network Rail is reminding passengers to check their travel before leaving this Easter weekend - and beyond - and these are the service alterations in place for ScotRail services:

April 15 - Dunbartonshire: Glasgow, Cumbernauld, Falkirk Grahamston

Track and structure maintenance is taking place between Cumbernauld and Falkirk Grahamston, which will see buses replace trains between both stations.

Passengers are being reminded to use Glasgow Queen Street low level for services to and from Cumbernauld.

April 15 and 17 - Lanarkshire

Re-signalling works are taking place in the Motherwell area, with the following changes in place:

Glasgow Central to Newton
Buses will operate between Kings Park/Burnside and Newton

Glasgow Central to Motherwell / Lanark / Carstairs
Trains will operate between Glasgow Central (low level) and Lanark (via Whifflet). Buses will run between Glasgow Central and Wishaw.

Dalmuir - Whifflet / Motherwell
Buses will run between Whifflet and Motherwell.

The 22:46 Dalmuir to Motherwell is to be replaced by bus between Bridgeton and Motherwell.

Glasgow Central to Edinburgh (via Shotts)
Buses will operate between Shotts and Glasgow Central.
The 0600 Motherwell to Edinburgh (via Shotts) service is cancelled and will be replaced by bus throughout.
The 1749 Edinburgh to Glasgow is cancelled and replaced by a bus, as is the 1803 Glasgow to Edinburgh service.

Glasgow Central to Edinburgh (via Carstairs)
Buses will operate between Edinburgh and Glasgow (via Carstairs).

Milngavie - Cumbernauld (via Hamilton and Motherwell) Dalmuir - Larkhall
Buses will run between Bridgeton and Larkhall/Motherwell and Cumbernauld. Some services will depart Glasgow Central low level, Argyle Street, and Bridgeton stations earlier than normal.

Ayr - North Berwick
Trains operate between Ayr - Glasgow Central and Edinburgh - North Berwick only.

Monday, April 17 only
1633 Glasgow Queen Street to Lenzie is cancelled and replaced by a bus.
1715 Edinburgh to North Berwick will not call at Longriddry and Drem. A bus will operate between Edinburgh and Drem.

Tuesday 18 April only
0547 and 0622 Motherwell to Lanark are both cancelled and replaced by bus.

April 16 - Lanarkshire

Re-signalling works are taking place in the Motherwell area, with the following changes in place:

Glasgow Central (high level) to Newton services
Buses will operate between Burnside and Newton.

Glasgow Central (high level) to Motherwell/Lanark services
Trains will operate between Glasgow Central (low level) and Lanark (via Whifflet). Buses will run between Glasgow Central and Wishaw.

Balloch to Motherwell (via Whifflet) services
Buses to operate between Whifflet and Motherwell.

Balloch to Larkhall and Milngavie to Motherwell (via Hamilton) services
Buses to operate between Bridgeton and Larkhall/Motherwell (via Hamilton).

Please also note that a bus service will be in place for TransPennine Express and Virgin Trains West Coast passengers between Carlisle and Glasgow Central over the Easter weekend.

Also, CrossCountry and Virgin Trains East Coast will not run between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central.

Therefore, customers are advised to use alternative lines between Edinburgh and Glasgow and buses will be in place between Motherwell and Glasgow Central.

April 29 - Lanarkshire

Track maintenance is taking place between Edinburgh and Carstairs, which will affect:

Ayr - Edinburgh / North Berwick (via Carstairs)
Buses will replace trains between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh calling at intermediate stations.

1021 Edinburgh to Glasgow Central High Level is diverted via Shotts.
A bus will operate between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central calling at Haymarket, Carstairs, Carluke, Wishaw, and Motherwell.

2314 Edinburgh to Motherwell is diverted via Shotts.
A bus will operate between Kirknewton and Motherwell calling at intermediate stations.

April 30 - Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire

Signalling equipment is being renewed in the Lanarkshire area, which will affect:

Glasgow Central to Motherwell / Lanark
Buses replace trains between Glasgow and Motherwell / Lanark calling at intermediate stations.

Motherwell to Milngavie (via Hamilton Central)
Buses replace trains between Hamilton Central and Motherwell calling at Airbles only.

Motherwell to Balloch (via Whifflet)
Buses replace trains between Whifflet and Motherwell.

Journey times will be increased and replacement buses may arrive/depart earlier or later than advertised train times.
