DRIVERS will be able to try out electric vehicles as part of an exhibition dedicated to showcasing renewables being launched in Glasgow today by power company SSE.

The test car is one of a number of attractions at the Power Of Now exhibition that aims to attract thousands of visitors and school children every year.

SSE has installed six electric charging points and hire facilities for electric vehicles, along with interactive displays that demonstrate how hydroelectric dams, wind turbines and the electricity grid work.

Among the custom-built exhibits is one designed by staff from Glasgow Science Centre which offers a "hands-on" experience by allowing visitors to release water from an upper reservoir and watch as a model city below is illuminated.

Another exhibit features a near life-size wind turbine base with one of the biggest infinity mirrors in the UK.

The initiative was welcomed by Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, who said: "Through the Sustainable Glasgow partnership we aim to be one of Europe's most sustainable cities and we are working hard to ensure Glasgow becomes cleaner, greener and healthier."

The exhibition is being opened today by Quentin Wilson, one of the country's best-known motoring enthusiasts, and will open to the public tomorrow.
