A demolition firm has been suspended from operating vehicles after an incident which saw an HGV left hanging over the A90 after it lost a wheel.

James Astle, deputy traffic commissioner, ruled the conduct of Edinburghbased Chamic Demolition Services Ltd had been "seriously remiss" in the run-up to the incident on August 1 last year.

The order, which means that the business is prevented from using any HGV under its licence, will only be lifted when the company appoints a new transport manager.

The decision follows a public inquiry held in Edinburgh last month which heard how the vehicle's right side came loose and detached as it was travelling across a flyover of the A904, near Queensferry.

An investigation following the incident reported concerns over the company's procedures for keeping its vehicles roadworthy and also questioned whether the driver had carried out a visual check of the vehicle before using it on the day, to identify any defects such as loose wheel nuts. It emerged all 10 of the wheel nuts were missing.

Company director Michael Hunter told the inquiry he could not believe the vehicle had missed any inspections and explained improvements had been made or were due to be introduced, including on the issue of wheel security. He admitted the incident had been a "wake-up call".
