DIRECT flights between Glasgow and Rome are to start next March.

Budget airline Jet2 said it would fly up to three times a week to the Italian capital over summer, bringing it into direct competition with Ryanair, which operates services from nearby Prestwick Airport.

It is the third new route announced by Jet2 in as many months, following the addition of Madrid and Barcelona earlier this summer.

The airline started operations at Glasgow Airport four months ago and now flies to 14 destinations, including Ibiza, Lanzarote, Malaga and New York.

Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow’s style and cultural credentials will resonate with potential visitors from Italy and we will be working to maximise growth opportunities from this key market.

“Italy represents the seventh largest international market for Glasgow, with 33,500 trips being made annually to the city by Italian visitors, which equates to £9 million in local economic benefit.”

Steve Heapy, chief commercial officer of Jet2.com, said: “It’s great to be able to offer the people of Scotland the opportunity to travel to Rome’s leading airport at low flight prices.”

The flights to Fiumicino Airport will cost from £29.99 one way including taxes.
