MOST car drivers are "caught by surprise" by motorbikes but as many as 40% of drivers reckon motorcyclists are inconsiderate.

An AA/Populus survey shows that 57% of motorists were often surprised when a motorcycle seemed to appear from nowhere.

Those caught out most were female drivers and drivers aged over 65.

The poll also revealed 92% of drivers recognised motorcyclists were vulnerable and always gave them more space.

AA president Edmund King told a motorcycle conference in London yesterday: "It is worrying that half of all drivers are often caught out by 'invisible' motorcycles seemingly coming out of nowhere. Motorcyclists also need to always be aware that they might not be seen.

"We need a step change in attitudes to provide a positive role for powered two-wheelers in our transport strategy.

"Safer, more fuel-efficient bikes coupled with serious inclusion of motorcycling within transport policy could bring benefits for all road users."
