WALKING and cycling in Glasgow is being given a £1.2 million boost which will see some of the city's busiest street redesigned.

Sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, is set to contribute nearly £1.2m towards cycling and walking improvements in Glasgow after the council successfully bid for funding.

The cash will pay for the redesign of road space along West Nile Street to drastically improve the north-south cycling connection across the city centre.

Victoria Road in the south side will also be redesigned to make walking and cycling to local schools and amenities more convenient, safe and enjoyable.

In addition, Sustrans funding will contribute to the construction of a two-mile cycling and walking link along the south bank of the River Clyde from Richmond Park to the Tradeston Bridge. The route will connect directly into the new segregated cycle route along West Street.

Tom Bishop, of Sustrans, said: "We received a great number of applications to our Community Links Programme and have worked hard to carefully select those of the highest quality to fund.

"We are committed to ensuring that individuals and communities are better connected by safe and accessible walking and cycling facilities. The developments that will be taken forward in Glasgow will provide both those who live in and visit Glasgow with excellent facilities to travel actively.

"We look forward to working with Glasgow City Council in order to ensure the successful delivery of their projects."
