MISTAKES by inadequately trained pilots and faulty equipment caused an Air France jet to plunge into the Atlantic, killing all 228 people aboard, French air accident investigators said.

The BEA air accident investigation agency is now recommending better training for pilots and stricter plane certification rules as a result of its three-year probe into the crash of Flight 447.

Graham Gardner, from Gourock, Inverclyde, was among those killed in the crash in June 2009.

The 52-year-old worked for Subsea 7, whose UK base is in Aberdeen, in Brazil as master of pipe-laying and construction vessel Lochnagar. He had been flying home to join his wife Joyce, 51.

The report cited "human and technical factors" for the crash. The plane, flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, crashed into the sea during a night-time thunderstorm in Air France's deadliest ever accident.
