A new third runway at Heathrow is backed by Inverness Chamber of Commerce, but only if the Highland capital is guaranteed flights to and from the airport.

The Airports Commission is assessing both Gatwick and Heathrow airports' bids for additional runway capacity, both of which are controversial.

Chaired by Sir Howard Davies, The Commission was set up by the UK government in November 2012 to examine the capacity required to maintain the UK's position as Europe's most important aviation hub.

In its interim report in December, it identified a need for one additional runway in London and the south east. Proposals from Gatwick and Heathrow were put out for public consultation, which ends tomorrow.

In its submission, Inverness Chamber backs Heathrow's North West Runway proposal because the ambition to connect all parts of the UK as an international hub airport.

Its support, however, is given with the clear condition that Inverness Airport is guaranteed services operated by principal airlines to and from Heathrow, and that these should be given financial backing if necessary.

This requirement has been made in response to several recent blows, including the early mothballing of Flybe's London City/Inverness route which launched just over three months ago.

Stewart Nicol, Chief Executive said "Throughout the consultation process we have been struck by the scale and ambition of Heathrow's proposal, which has the economic prosperity of the UK at its heart. In addition to setting out a compelling economic case, the airport has engaged with local and national stakeholders to listen to the ambitions they have for the project and address any concerns.

"We also believe that Heathrow's proposal recognises the economic importance and potential of all regions of the UK. Highland businesses are increasingly operating competitively in the global market place, and in spite of our unfit for purpose infrastructure, the region has enjoyed consistent economic growth. Nevertheless, this cannot be sustained for much longer without improved connectivity. "
