Long flight delays to cost airlines

AIR passengers will be entitled to compensation of up to £487 for flights that are delayed by more than three hours following a European Court ruling that could open the floodgates to claims against airlines.

The right of passengers under European law had been put on hold following a legal challenge in 2009 by a number of airlines, including EasyJet and British Airways. However, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg confirmed the 2009 ruling after the airlines had challenged the UK's Civil Aviation Authority over the matter.
