PROSTHETIC limbs, a living room carpet and even a box of maggots - these are just some of the wide variety of weird and wonderful items left behind on Glasgow buses.

The city's largest operator, First, revealed lists of the weirdest and most common lost property found on their buses.

The weirdest include a prosthetic leg, sewing machine, box of maggots, worms and crickets, a table and chairs set, Santa suit and a living room carpet.

However, even the most common list throws up some oddities - with a number of passengers getting off without their prams and buggies.

As well as bank cards, bus passes, mobile phones, hats and scarves, drivers also discovered forgotten school bags and PE kits.

Around 40,000 pieces of lost items are found on First Glasgow's fleet of 950 buses every year and each one is returned to First's lost property office.

Every item is scrutinised by lost property assistant Jean Scott, 59, and her 18-year-old apprentice Kirsty Ballantyne, (18).

The pair turn detective on a daily basis, finding clues from lost possessions and trying to reunite them with their owners from across the city and beyond.

Ms Scott said: "You wouldn't believe what I've seen over the years, in the last week we've taken in a hamster's cage and two pairs of false teeth. I remember when I opened a fisherman's bag and discovered tubs of earthworms which I later released in the local park. Once we even managed to return a lost suitcase to Australia.

"We enjoy uncovering the story behind each object, we get great satisfaction getting as many things back to their owners as we can."
