MOTORISTS faced gridlock after part of a major commuter road was closed because roadworks overran.

The northbound carriageway of the M77 at Junction 1 Dumbreck was closed for more than an hour from 7am yesterday after the overnight works took longer than expected.

This resulted in slow traffic between Junction 2 Barrhead Road and Junction 1, affecting the road up to Junction 5 Maidenhill.

Commuter Frederick Harring-ton, who travels to Glasgow city centre from Ayr, said his journey, which usually takes 45 minutes, took more than two hours.

The 44-year-old office worker said traffic signs, radio reports and Twitter feeds were giving different reports.

He said: "It was slow moving from Junction 5 but by the time you got to Junction 4 it wasn't going anywhere. I could have come off early if I had known."

A spokesman from Transport Scotland confirmed that roadworks had overrun but said the road reopened at around 8.15am.
