Passenger numbers at two of BAA's three Scottish airports rose last month, according to new figures.

Aberdeen Airport saw the biggest boost with a 10.2% increase on March 2011. BAA said the increase reflected the rise in domestic traffic related to the oil industry.

At Glasgow Airport, passenger numbers for March 2012 were up 4.6% on the same month last year. However, Edinburgh Airport saw a 2.8% drop.

Aberdeen Airport handled 275,700 passengers last month.

Derek Provan, its managing director, said: "The continued growth in passenger numbers is good news for the airport and reflects the obvious buoyancy in the regional economy.

"With the summer schedule now under way, we are confident that this success story will continue."

Glasgow Airport said the main growth driver was the "dramatic increase" in international traffic which grew by 13.8%. It said the introduction of routes to Rome and Barcelona contributed to the rise, as did the strong performance of airlines such as easyJet, Emirates, Jet2.com and KLM, all of which reported growth.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "We have been working extremely hard to expand our route network and the addition of a number of new destinations such as Rome, which is a first for Glasgow, was undoubtedly a factor in attracting more passengers to the airport.

"The Easter getaway ensured we had a busy start to April and with a number of major conferences taking place in Glasgow in the coming weeks, we hope this trend can continue."

Glasgow Airport handled 507,600 passengers last month while 700,000 passed through Edinburgh Airport.

The capital's airport said it was expecting the drop.

A spokesman said: "Passenger numbers are on forecast. That drop in passenger numbers is mainly based around the fact that Ryanair's winter schedule took some passenger numbers away from us. That has been constant over the past three or four months.

"We are hopeful as we move to summer schedules that our figures will pick up."
