PASSENGERS are being asked what they want to see on a major London to Scotland rail route when it is returned to the private sector next year.

Since autumn 2009, the East Coast Main Line has been run on behalf of the Department for Transport after National Express pulled out of the franchise.

Consultation for a new privately-run franchise, which will operate from December 2013, was launched yesterday by Rail Minister Theresa Villiers.

She said: "There are exciting changes on the horizon for the East Coast line. It is set to receive a brand new fleet of InterCity Express trains. This consultation will help us make decisions how we get the most from the improvements planned for the line."
