Three-year delay for west coast ferry bidding process

A COMPETITION to run the CalMac network of ferry services off Scotland's west coast has been delayed by three years amid a privatisation row, a union has claimed.

A six-year contract to operate ferries to the Clyde and Hebridean islands is currently held by publicly owned company David MacBrayne but is due to expire in autumn next year.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, which secured a ballot of nine to one in favour of strike action among CalMac workers this week over pensions and workplace rights, said the delay was a "massive victory" for its campaign to keep the company in public ownership.
