Warning over rail franchise extension

The UK Government is on the brink of compounding the "shambles" of rail privatisation by handing Virgin an 18-month contract to continue running services on the West Coast Main Line, a union has said.

The RMT said ministers were set to award Virgin a "pay as you go" contract after the franchise fiasco.

The UK Government decided Virgin had lost out to FirstGroup, but earlier this month it said the process would start again because of flaws in evaluating previous bids.
