16 killed as storms hit China

TORRENTIAL rains have killed at least 16 and affected one-and-a-half million people in southern and northern China.

In the southern Guangxi region, heavy rains over the past three days affected 450,000 people, destroyed 1000 homes and wiped out vast swathes of crops.

Another 730,000 people were affected in the southern province of Jiangxi, with up to 30,000 evacuated. In the adjacent manufacturing powerhouse province of Guangdong, some 312,000 people were affected by the floods.
