African priests offer salvation for French church facing recruiting crisis

In an odd reversal of colonial history hundreds of Catholic priests from Africa have moved to France in recent years, catering for the spiritual needs of a country that suffers – like most of Europe – from a crisis of church vocations.

With half of France’s 14,000 priests aged over 75 – and only 90 new ordinations last year – the only way to keep many parishes functioning is to call on recruits from the former empire, where Catholicism goes from strength to strength.
