Ahmadinejad's political plight could stop the conflict warming up

Long in the deep freeze, Cold War politics have returned to the Middle East with a vengeance.

As Iran plays hard to get with the West over the issue of developing nuclear weapons the country has triggered a dangerous arms race with Israel, allegedly already a nuclear power and its most potent rival in the Middle East. At present it's confined to a proxy war with assassination and sabotage as the main weapons, but there are fears, expressed yesterday by Foreign Secretary William Hague, that it could be sparked into the real thing.
